Ll Field Trials Scheduled On Duck Hepatitis Vaccine TO HEAD TRIALS of vaccine for immunization against duck scourage , virus hepatitis , is Dr. Jen Hwang, staff pathologist at Long Island Duck Research Cooperative , Inc. in Eastport. Slated for test inoculations this month are about 10 , 000 breeder ducks on Long Island farms. — Advance Photo by Gomez EASTPORT — Sometime this mon^h , about 10, 000 breeder ducks, on faims throug hout Suffolk Coun- ty will receive inoculat.ons against virus hepatitis , a disease that can destroy as high as 50 per cent of an infected duck flock and luu ex- acted losses among duck farmers in hundreds of thousands of dol- lars. Vdrus hepatitis is shown by cur- lent researcn to be unrelated to hepatiti s infections that have pla- gued the human population , accord- ing to Dr. Jen Hwang, staff path- ologist at the Long Island Duck Re- • ^eaich Cooperative , Inc. located in East port. The ambitious fie 'd trials of the vaccine , to be undertaken by the Cornell University affiliated center at the request of local ±aiinert. , aie the cuiuminati.on of many months ' researcn into tbe cause and cure of the infection. As near as can be determined , the disease is trans- mitted to duck s by water , feed or ^nsects , Dr. Hwang says. Thirty litres of a non-pathogenic vaccine , developed last year by Dr. Hwang, using cultuies ol chicken embryos and duck embryo liver cells , are available at the center , and farmers may have their ble- eder ducks inoculated by contac- ting the center , Dr. Hwang said. In controlled experiments at the center last Summer , it was deter- mined that inoculated breeder ducks tended to produce ducklings immune fiom the infection. Accordingly, thousands of bre- eders will be inoculated in the forthcoming field tests of the vac- cine. Following the initial shot , a booster shot will be adminisuered two weeks later . About three weeks after the booster shot , when ducklings are hatched , the effec- tiveness of the vaccine m helping to produce immune offspring should be determined , Dr. Hwang says. An experimental group of duck- lings , consisting of ducklings from inoculated breeders and ducklings from uninoculated breeders , will be studied closely at the center. Dr. Hwang told The Long Island Advance that laboratory experi- ments have produced immune duck- lings two and one half weeks after the inoculation of breeders. Aft<* r the field inoculations , Dr Hwang and his assistant , Ira Stephens , will be interested in how long inoculat- ed breeder ducks continue to pro- duce immune ducklings. Development of the vacc ' ne came after post-mortem examinations of infected ducks from farms within a 20 mile radius of the center and thioug h the obseivation of infected ducks isolated at the center.
