Middle Island Rorarians Hear Address on Hospitals ROTARY SPEAKER , James Russell Clark , F.A.C.H.A. adminis- trator of Brookhaven Memorial Hospital , and Patehogue Rotarian , spoke recently to the Middle Island Rotary on \Hospitals of To- day and Tomorrow \ at meeting in Ridge. — Photo by John C. Walker RIDGE — On December 18 , the Middle Island Rotary Club met at Linsey ' s Restaurant in Ridge and heard James Russell Clark , F.A.C.H. A. administrator of the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital deliver a talk m \Hosp itals of Today and Tomorrow \ . Mr . Clark , a Patehogue Ro- -arian , was formerly affiliated with the Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. • * > — - He pointed out that one out of very seven persons will , during die course of a year , find need of i hospital' s services. Their aver- age stay will be two days shorter because of newer techniques and equi pment. He stated that modern oreventative and diagnostic medi- cines have reduced the bed care for- merly required in many illnesses, but that this has been offset by in- creased traffic accident victims. It has become popular of late , he said , to criticize hospitals for the high cost of confinement. This is due to the increased cost of labor and materials , to the greater vari- ety of services offered and to the high cost of modern equi pment re- quired , he explained. Even with high prices , hospitals today gen- erally operate at a loss , making iup the difference through endow- ments and contributions , it was stated. The future will see hospitals growing away f rom the \ repair shop \ principle and more toward comprehensive medical centers. The buildings will be more com- pact , utilizing* a central service core surrounded bv patients, he continued. Mr. Clark envisions a centralized medical bureau capable . through electronic equipment , of sunplyine immediate diagnostic information to doctors in outlying areas , and forsees greater use of small electronic eouinment worn bv the patient during normal acti - vity to record pertinent data or to refidate faulty bodil y functions. Mr. Clark graphicaHy demon- strated how fully hospital s are used today when compared with onl y a few years hack bv request- ing* a show of hands of th^^e mem- bers born in a hosp ital .
