Curtain Is Down On Cauliflower Deal for Year RIVERHEAD — The curta in came down December 1G on the 19G1 cauliflower deal w ith the holding of the final auction si s, - sion at the Long Island Cauli- flower Associa.ion ' s Riverhead block. The LICA block in Southold closed a week ear-ier. A complete report and statisti- cal summary of the year ' * , opera- tions will be r ,iven at the asso- ciation ' s annual meetins* . schedul- ed for January 13 here in River- head. These will show that the past season has been the least re- warding in nearly 3U years. While the average retiu n to the grower will probably exceed last year ' s $2.08 V_ per crate , only about 353 000 crates were sold at auction this year , according to LICA General Manager Robert V. Roosa. Last year , 886 , 681 crates of cauliflower were sold over the twin blocks. Local grow ers started the 1JT 1 season with high expectations bas- ed on healthy plantings totaling about 4 , 000 acres , approximately the same acreage as in the pre- ceding year. But heat and humi- dity ruined the early planting, and a September hurricane took a heavy toll of mid-season stands. Onl y late p^ntings produced any- thing approaching normal yields. Fortunately, this combination of unfavorable weather factors oc- curs about once in a generation , although this is cold comfort to growers \ right now. .But on the ba- sis of past performance , Long Island should snap back next year witn bet.er than a million-crate crop if growing conditions are closer to normal. At the closing sale December 18 2 , 192 crates of 'flower i** 37 farm loads came to the block. Pricea ranged from 75 cents to $1.65, mostly $1.05 to $1.55. The remnants of the crop were still being merchandized this year , with the greater part going to pickle buyers. INTEREST RATES — Direc- tors of Security National Bank of Long Island have voted to increase the savings interest rates , effec- tive January 1 , to 3\_ per cent en balances on deposit for the full quarterly interest period and 4 per cent on those balances on de- posit continuously for one year or more , it was announced by Her- man H. Maass , president. The bank has been paying 3 per cent interest on all savings. Interest at the new rates wi ll be credited and compounded quar- terly, with deposits received on or before January 10 credited for in- terest' from N Januay 1. It was al- so noted that no upper limit has been placed by the bank on the one-year mone> at the 4 per cent rate. Close grower-shipper coopera- tion , excellent quality and the ready availability of both dry and washed stocks in a wide range of consumer packs has helped this area to win and hold business i.i this most difficult of years. Despite strong selling competi - tion from Maine and other areas , the price has also held , although at the low level of $1 to the grower for bulk stock delivered at the grading price and $1.40 sacked graded , FOB shipping point. The recent announcement of a limited institutional-school lunch purchase program b y the U.S. De- partment of Agriculture , together with a miniature diversion pro- gam , has helped firm the local market and encourage the hard- pressed producers. The Agricultural Stabilizatior and Conservation Committee here in Riverhead , which will direct the operation of the purchase pro- gram , is bending every effort to have it going before the first of the year , according to Elmer D. Mather , manager. More than one- half of the estimated 300 growers having storage homings hav e notified the committee of their readiness to participate in the program. New York State officials , from Gov . Rockefeller down , have been highly cooperative in helping in the development of institutional and other outlets. Following a con- ference of farm leaders with Lt. Gov. Malcolm Wilson in Brent- wood recently, it was announced that orders will be forthcoming from mental hygiene and other in- stitutions for 139 truckloads and from schools for an additional 20 loads. It is understood these orders and others to follow will be divided between upstat e and Long Island producers. Walter Plisko , chair- man of the ASC Committee , was scheduled to meet with upstate ASC officials in Syracuse last Thursday to work out methods of operation and apportionment. USDA will pay $1.65 per cwt. for US No. 1 Size A potatoes , sacked , graded and inspected , and will donate them to eligible insti - tutions and schools withi n the state. Up to last Thursday, some 50 truckloads of local US No. 2s had been shipped to a livestock feed outlet in New Jersey, and this single diversion outlet presentl y open to Long Island is expected to take at least as many more. Payment , based on the percentage of 2s in each load as determined by inspction , cannot exceed 60 cents per cwt. Total movement from Long Island up to December 20 was 14 ,- 821 loads. The corresponding fig- ure on December 20 , 1960 was 17 , - 407. school at 11 a. m. The Rev. Alfred Hofler of Centereach is the va- cancy pastor.
