Village Rec. Report Plan Sloball 1962 l- . \ Pete Poulos _ SLOBALL Hn * .2 -The f, r -t ine-t- ing \f ail niaiiaii.'i- s , sponsors or mteie.ste.l person. - , of the Pateh- • mie Village Recreation D»pt. Slo- ball Lean tie- will he held Januarv 1/ at the Foar S>ter.s Cumniuni.v ( ent\i- at T. - . ' . 'O p. ,„. This will he the ltrst organizational meeting foi 1. IH2 and all aie requested to have -ome representative piesent. We will discuss the pit ihlems that we tiicounteie d last season in order to make th\ neee- ,ary by-laws before the season beg.lis . One ma jot - problem that we had la. st . sear which we debated and voted to leave it as it was , is the left field fence at the Fhoi-ofront Park. Dunne; the county tournament , u-e decided to make the left fie 'd fence up to a certain <lesiiMiat»d spot a ground nile double. Th' s move proved so vi oithw hile that I m . once attain go- ii' -r to ask the hoard of managers to consider this move. The second proposition that will ht requested will be the appoint- ment of a \•Commissioner \ of th r ' league—a person to handle all the problems that arise for each leagu\ , someone to he responsible to reschedule the rainout games , handle the publicity and generally be th\ii- representative. Each It ague should have a commissioner 01 a rep re en alive to handle their particular problems. La.s t year we had 1(5 teams divided into two leagues—an \A' ' league and a \B\ leasrue. We will once again try to have 10 teams in the same catego- r ; e.s . The<o two leagues had minu- mum age I' mit of 30 years of age with two players allowed unck r 28. The area zone is a 5-mile radius of Patchogue \' illage limits. SLOBALLL A NT AGE — This year for the first time we wi'l have a sloball league w ; th an open a ii' n limit , but they must be within School District 24 to b<* elibible to p lay. This league will be playing their games at night under the li ghts at Shorefront Park. I am hoping that we hav e a four team league and thev \* .. ill play on open dates at th. Shoiefront Park. Thi- leagu. . will t-ovei the fellow s who want to play ball but are not o 'd enough tor th\ . '10 and over leagues and two old to play Connie Mack ball. Many fellows have requested oi me to start thi- league because there wasn ' t too much t,» do for the younger fellows in the area. The first meeting for all interested per- sons, will be held at the Four Sisters Center January 21. If we have a gootl turnout , we will discuss some of the many rules that will be need- ed to run the league. The fees that will be charged and the ump ires that will be need\d to cover the games will have to be asked to attend the meetings in the future so that they will be oi ienti-d with th<- . rules of the league. LITTLE (URLS SOFTBALL — This year we will trv to start our league early in Lit.le Girls Soft- hall in order that we will comp lete our season b\iore the vacation sea- son begins and many of the gnN cannot make it. I am t-al'ing foi the first meet for all girls ' man- agers and interested p r r-ons for January . 'II at the Four Sisters Center at 7:150 p. m. This meeting will be a meeting to elect officer- , and try to get the board of mana- gers on the way as early as pos- sible. We will also try to have registration for Li.tk Gills , -ome- time in February or eirl y March. This way we will have the teams ready to roll by April. Sponsors are also invited to attend this meeting ODDS AND E.VDS—The Suffolk County Sloball Championships will be divided in sections and each sec- tion will send a representative dur- ing the Labor Day weekend. Some of the committee who will help ni\ with this protect will be Jim Reese of Brookhaven Town Recreation. lien Poidamoni of Islip and Ken Rowland of R' verhead. We wi'l try to divide Suffolk Countv into eight sections and they will pla\ to see which eig ht teams w 'll p lay in the Labor Day weekend Champion- ships. Th© Hot Corn©r Bv jamcs Barbanei THE EYES of all Suffolk Count y basketball fans will be focused on the Patchogue High School hardwood tomorrow night -when West Babylon invades Patchogue for what must be the most important A-2 League game of the lSKil-(i2 season. For Patchogue , defending league champions , it could determine what change the Red Raiders have in repeating for the . second year in a row. In last year ' s meetings between the two schools , the Raiders won 58-53 at Patchogue. Fi\e weeks later at West Babylon. Patchogue posted a 7'!-( 'l victory en loute to a perfect league mark of 10-0. But this is a different season. Some of the personnel has change d anil even the wen-lost records are different. AT THIS STAGE last year , Patchogue had an overall mark of 4-1 and just finished in fourth place in tli e annual Hauppauge Yuletid- Basketball Festival. Exactl y a year later , finds the Raiders with a f i- ' A mark and once again finished fourth in the Hauppauge Christmas Tournament. Last season , Patchogue ' s leading scorer was Bud Roonev as the Ilai.ler. s posted an imiire—dvo victory over Sayville but not as yet jel ' ed into the so lid team that w ent on to win the league title. Now in 1002 , the stoiy is the same. Rooney leads the scorers hut Patchogue has lost thiee of their last four games after winning their first four. On the oth'T hand. West Babylon will come into tomorrow ' s con- test with only a ( ' .i-l ' il defeat at the hands of Northport , marring an otheiwise pel foi t record. Among their victims have been highly ranked Bab ylon twice , Lindenhurst and Bay Shore , the latter in league play. COACH HERB HEMENMNGER , in his third year at the Eagle hi lm, has a veteran unit headed by Jack O'Donnell and Jeff Fallon. O'Donnell , a shift y backcourt man , is the team ' s leading scorer while Fallon is the top rebounder and second best point maker. Also on hand to make things miserable for the Raiders are guard Bub McFadden , who scored 17 points against the locals at West Babj - Ion. and Richie Larsen , a rugged G-3 rebounder. The key to Patchogue ' s success against West Babylon la.st year was the brilliant defensive job turned in by Elwyn Schaefer on Fallon. In the two games , Fallon was hold to a total of 1G points , far below his season average. Patchogue ' s big guns against the Eagles were Ernie Dahlman in the first game and Rooney in the second. Rooney scored 27 points to lead the Raider\ to victory on the Eagle court. It is interesting to note that this is Rooney ' s individual high as a varsity performer. AS FOR THE RAIDERS , Coach Cliff Ross expressed disappoint- ment in his team ' s showing at Hauppauge. \I thought our performance was poor , \ said Aoss. \All w . e did was stand around. But we were in sub-pa- condition. \ Schaet -i- had twisted his ankle in practice the week before and did not see action until the consolation game against Central Islip. Also , Vince LeCerb o was hobbled by a callous on his foot and Steve Skinner ' 1 new glasses did not arrive. Both played in the two games but were unable to give performances best expected of them. Ross has high hopes of eveyorie bein£ in excellent shape for tomorrow ' s important contest. To get more rebounding strength , Joe Hauser was brought up from the junior varsity. Hauser , a 6-3 sop homore , played some against Northport and started against Central Islip. \He will definitely stay up with the varsity, \ said Ross who thought the youngster did a good job in his \ Ross made no predictions about his squad rencating as league champs. But the Patchogue coach figures it might be a three-team race between his team , West Baby lon and Bay Shore . The season is a long way from being over and anything can happen. It usually does. Ll Ducks Win Two By Al Baron COMMACK — With the v- ar 1901 rapidly running out , Coach John Murkier told his Long Island Ducks la. st Thursday night that unless the team can coii.e up with some earl y victories their chance-; for a playoff berth will dissipate just as quickl y. Trailing the Ducks: Apparently Claude Vinet and Gilh-s Villeniure paid c ' ose atten- tion. The left wing went out on th\ he against Knowille and Xew Haven in the Thur-day an i Saturday games, scored 2 goals in a 4-2 victory over th<> Knights and then came light back with a o-goal uudoi malice against the Blades in a stunning 8-0 w in . Muck' er certainly enjoyed Jiis Now Year ' s Eve , as did Villeinin e who stashed awa\ his second straight shutout over Xew Haven . 1902 sauted off les, joy fuIK as the Ducks took on the Blade ' s for the . second time in :! da\s . .
