A The Brookhaven Town comp- troller ' s office this week released figures showing actual tax rates in the town ' s 22 school districts and all but one show increases. A \ computer error \ in id ' uulaLirig luc VaiUE Gi propsri.;cs in the small South Haven School District resulted in an exemption for $40 , 800 worth of property which should have been taxed , said Superintendent Andrew Havens. The result is a net decrease of $29 , 000 in the assessed valuation of the district. Normally, that might not be a lot to worry about , but in this district it means that instead of the tax rate going up 40 cents per $100 of assessed valuation , it will go up d»i no Mr. Havens said : \Because of an error , everyon e in this district will have to pay $1.52 more per tfM f\C\ nf n oc*^£?czii^ irolllG f ir\T\ thlC year , \ something he described as \discouraging especially since the board spent so much time and energy liying io minimize iht; Lax rate increase . \ Havens said the average homeowner will pay another $45.60 in taxes because of the mistake. The money will be given back to the district by the county and put in an interest-bearing account to be applied toward next year ' s spending plan. There , the rate in- creased bv about 93 cents , from $35,403 to $36,337 per $100 of OCCDCCJO H vg liiptinn According to District Superintendent Arthur Becker , the bulk of the increase was the result of the recent settlement with district teachers. \We ab- sorbed part of it but we couldn 't absorb the whole thing, \ he said . Patchogue-Medford showed the tax rate up $1,935 per $100 of assessed valuation , from $32,450 to $34,385 . The district granted spninr fMti7Pn and npw inHn^ trv construction exemptions of $564 , 664 .
